Dubai Walk Master Plan: the revolution for pedestrians in Dubai

Guillaume Giroux on 13 december 2024
A luxurious, futuristic cityscape at sunset highlights Dubai's master plan with its elegant skyscrapers and picturesque waterfront. People stroll, cycle and gather near palm trees along modern pathways beside a multi-lane road, capturing the essence of urban elegance.

Dubai is preparing to become a "pedestrian city all year round" with an ambitious project: the Dubai Walk Master Plan. The plan, announced by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in December 2024, calls for more than 6,500 km of pedestrian walkways. This transformation of the city of Dubai will promote an active and sustainable lifestyle. Dubai is often criticized for being difficult to get around on foot. This will soon be a thing of the past!

6,500 kilometers of sidewalks and pedestrian areas

The project includes the construction of 3,300 km of new trails by 2040, as well as the renovation of 2,300 km of existing trails. After 2040, a further 900 km will be developed. The network will cover 160 areas across the emirate, with trails adapted to different uses:

  • 112 km of riverside walks,
  • 124 km of green paths,
  • 150 km of rural and mountain trails.

In addition, 110 pedestrian bridges and tunnels will be built to improve connectivity and encourage soft mobility.

Sustainability and well-being at the heart of the project

The Dubai Walk Master Plan aims to increase the share of soft mobility (walking, cycling, etc.) from 13% to 25% by 2040, helping to make Dubai one of the world's healthiest and most sustainable cities. Urban spaces will be transformed to include rest areas, green spaces, as well as cultural and artistic exhibitions.

Two emblematic developments

Two flagship projects are included in the plan:

  1. The Al Ras Historic Route: A 15 km route linking emblematic monuments, with 5 km of revitalized waterfront.
  2. The Future Loop: A 2 km elevated walkway around the Museum of the Future, with a 30,000 m² air-conditioned area, ideal for walking in summer.

Connected, lively neighborhoods

The plan is in line with the "20-minute city" initiative. This concept calls for 80% of residents' daily needs, such as shops, schools and leisure activities, to be accessible on foot or by bicycle in less than 20 minutes. This approach is inspired by successful models such as Melbourne and Paris, reinforcing quality of life through local services.

A long-term vision for a prosperous future

By 2040, Dubai aims to reinvent its urban spaces with bike paths along the beaches, innovative parks, and infrastructure promoting well-being. The Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033, approved by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, includes:

  • 300% increase in cycle paths on beaches,
  • 60% extension of beaches for night-time swimming,
  • More than 30 new parks across the emirate.

A model for the cities of tomorrow

With the Dubai Walk Master Plan, Dubai once again demonstrates its role as a leader in urban innovation. This ambitious project brings together modernity, sustainability and well-being, enhancing the city's appeal to residents, investors and visitors alike.
