A large formation of soldiers in camouflage uniforms stands in ranks on a parade ground, illustrating the military might of the United Arab Emirates, with tanks and artillery behind them and national flags flying under the blue Gulf sky.

In a geopolitical context marked by tensions with Iran and instability in the Middle East, the United Arab Emirates has a modern and technologically advanced army. Despite its relatively small population, the country has built one of the most effective military forces in the region in just a few decades.

A relatively compact but highly modern army

The armed forces of the United Arab Emirates were officially unified in 1976 in order to consolidate the military forces of the various emirates. Today, they constitute the national defense apparatus and one of the pillars of regional stability.

The commander-in-chief of the army is the president of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The federal government oversees the country's defense policy and strategic direction.

The UAE Armed Forces have approximately 65, 000 active military personnel, in addition to reservists and paramilitary forces. The army is the largest component, with nearly 45,000 soldiers.

Despite its modest size, this army benefits from massive investment and a very high level of technology.

The different branches of the armed forces

The armed forces of the Emirates are organized into several main components:

  • the Army
  • the Air Force
  • the navy
  • the presidential guard
  • joint aviation
  • the National Guard

Each branch has a specific role in defending the territory and projecting power in the region.

The Presidential Guard plays a strategic role in special operations and the protection of sensitive infrastructure.

A highly mechanized army

The United Arab Emirates Army is designed for mechanized warfare and territorial defense. It has a large fleet of armored vehicles and modern artillery.

Among the main equipment used:

  • more than 400 battle tanks
  • more than 2,200 armored vehicles
  • approximately 300 artillery pieces

This equipment enables mechanized forces to be deployed quickly in the desert areas of the Gulf.

The Leclerc tank, designed in France, forms the backbone of the Emirati armored force with more than 350 units.

The army also uses BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles and numerous armored personnel carriers.

The ground forces are supplemented by modern artillery systems, including G6 howitzers and long-range multiple rocket launchers.

Highly advanced air defense systems

Faced with missile threats in the region, the United Arab Emirates has developed one of the most sophisticated air defense systems in the Middle East.

The country uses, in particular:

  • the Patriot PAC-3 system
  • the THAAD anti-missile system
  • Pantsir close-range defense systems

These systems can intercept ballistic missiles and hostile drones.

The Emirates was also the first foreign country to acquire the American THAAD missile defense system.

A highly effective air force

The UAE Air Force is considered one of the most effective in the Middle East. It has modern combat aircraft and precision strike systems at its disposal.

The main devices used include:

  • American F-16 fighter jets
  • French Mirage 2000s
  • Apache attack helicopters

These aircraft enable the defense of the territory as well as projection operations in the region.

The Emirates are also developing their own military technologies, including guided munitions such as the locally produced Desert Sting system.

A rapidly growing military industry

Traditionally dependent on arms imports, the United Arab Emirates is now seeking to develop its own defense industry.

Local industrial groups are now designing armored vehicles and military technologies adapted to desert conditions.

For example, the NIMR armored vehicle is produced in the Emirates and used by the army for operations in difficult environments.

This strategy aims to strengthen the country's strategic autonomy.

An army experienced in overseas operations

Since the 2000s, the Emirati armed forces have participated in several international military operations.

Troops have been deployed in particular in:

  • Afghanistan
  • Libya
  • Iraq
  • Syria
  • Yemen

These operations have enabled the Emirati forces to gain significant operational experience.

This capacity for intervention explains why some U.S. military officials refer to the UAE army as " Little Sparta , " in reference to its effectiveness despite its size.

A pillar of regional stability

In a Middle East marked by strong geopolitical tensions, the United Arab Emirates has built a modern, high-tech army.

Thanks to massive investments, international partnerships, and an ambitious military strategy, the country now has a force capable of defending its territory and protecting its interests.

In the context of regional tensions, particularly with Iran and missile threats in the Gulf, this military capability is central to the security of the Emirates and the stability of the region.
