Dubai: How are residents coping with the crisis?

Guillaume Giroux on 14 march 2026
People walk along a palm-lined promenade with modern buildings and shops in the background on a sunny day; some sit on benches, while others stroll or chat, discussing how Dubai residents are coping with the crisis stemming from the war in Iran.

Since the onset of military tensions involving Iran, life in Dubai has inevitably changed. Residents of the emirate are closely following the news and adapting to an unusual situation for a city known for its stability. Yet, despite the dramatic images that sometimes circulate on social media, daily life continues to function largely as usual.

The reality on the ground is often more nuanced than one might imagine from the outside.

Unusual alerts, but the situation is under control

In recent weeks, authorities in the United Arab Emirates have activated several security protocols. Air defense systems have been mobilized to intercept threats in the region’s airspace.

For residents, this has sometimes taken the form of alerts sent directly to their phones. These messages urge residents to take shelter for short periods while interception operations are underway.

Such situations remain rare, but they serve as a reminder that the region is going through a difficult time.

Despite this, the authorities’ response is highly organized. Official information is disseminated quickly and instructions are clear, which helps keep the public calm.

A population that is vigilant but generally calm

The early days of the crisis naturally sparked a great deal of discussion. Videos showing interceptions in the sky were widely shared and commented on.

In some neighborhoods, residents chose to return home early when the first alerts were issued. However, these reactions were mainly observed at the beginning of the situation.

Very quickly, a sense of normalcy began to take hold. Residents adapted to the safety protocols, and daily life returned to a near-normal rhythm.

Dubai remains an extremely cosmopolitan city, home to people from dozens of different countries. Many expatriates are accustomed to following geopolitical developments in the region.

Most residents are watching the situation closely, but without panic.

A reassuring statement from the authorities

One of the factors that has done the most to keep the situation calm is the authorities’ communication.

Emirati institutions regularly release information and remind the public of the importance of following official guidelines. Alerts sent to mobile phones allow authorities to quickly inform the public when necessary.

This approach helps prevent rumors and ensures clear communication with residents.

The authorities are also seeking to show that the situation remains under control. Leaders continue to appear in public, and economic activities are continuing.

These signals help reassure a large portion of the population.

A few departures, but the majority remains

As is often the case during periods of geopolitical tension, some expatriates have chosen to leave the region temporarily. These are often precautionary departures, as they wait to see how the situation develops.

However, these departures remain limited compared to Dubai’s total population. The city has more than three million residents, and the vast majority continue to live and work there.

Businesses remain open, shopping malls are still welcoming visitors, and restaurants are operating as usual.

The city remains economically and socially vibrant.

A person relaxes in an infinity pool overlooking the Dubai skyline and beaches. The breathtaking view offers a glimpse of the contrast between the urban luxury enjoyed by Dubai’s residents and the regional uncertainty stemming from the war in Iran.

A city accustomed to dealing with crises

Dubai has already weathered several difficult periods in its recent history. The 2008 global financial crisis caused a significant economic slowdown.

The COVID-19 pandemic had also created unprecedented global uncertainty. More recently, the severe flooding that hit the city raised many questions.

Time and again, Dubai has demonstrated a remarkable ability to adapt. The city has been able to respond quickly and get back on its feet.

This experience helps maintain a certain level of trust among residents today.

Life goes on

In most neighborhoods of Dubai, daily life goes on as usual. Schools are open, businesses are operating, and infrastructure is functioning normally.

Residents are keeping a close eye on developments in the region, but the city continues to move forward.

This ability to maintain its economic activity despite a tense geopolitical climate is part of Dubai’s identity.

For several decades, the emirate has established itself as an international economic hub capable of operating in a regional environment that is at times unstable.

For both residents and investors, this resilience remains one of the city’s most striking characteristics.
