As is often the case when it comes to "quality of life", it all depends on your aspirations and habits. This applies as much to the type of home you want to live in as it does to the type of job you want to do, and everything to do with daily life, including transportation.

In fact, that's exactly what we're going to focus on in the rest of this article. We'll try to answer the following question: is it possible to live without a car in Dubai? For many, the car is absolutely essential. For others, it's a plus, in a city that's already well connected. So, what's the right answer?

An efficient public transport network

Dubai's public transport network is particularly efficient. It is built around two major metro lines: the Red Line, which is the main line, and the Green Line. A third line, the Blue Line, is scheduled for completion in 2029, adding even greater density to the network.

Also in Dubai :

  • a particularly efficient bus network,
  • a tramway line linking Jumeirah Beach to Dubai Marina.

Traffic in Dubai

Traffic jams in Dubai can be quite severe. A recent study shows that by 2024, the number of traffic jams has increased, resulting in delays of around 35 hours a year, compared with 33 hours in 2023. This is due in particular to an increase in the number of vehicles registered in the Emirate, of the order of 8.7% in one year, compared with around 3% for the world average.

Growth driven by extremely strong economic development. Dubai continues to attract people, with a population set to exceed 4 million for the very first time, in the year 2025. But the authorities are well aware of the problem, and a number of measures have been announced.

A total of 21 construction projects, spread over 12 different zones, will see the light of day between now and 2029, including the imminent arrival of 634 new kilometers of road. The Salik toll system also envisages dynamic pricing while, as explained above, public transport continues to expand.

Is it possible to live without a car in Dubai?

So, is it possible to live car-free in Dubai ? The answer is... yes and no. In fact, if you decide to invest and live in an outlying district, with no public transport options, then a car will be an obligation. Indeed, you'll have no choice but to have one to get to work, or at least to a metro station to get around.

The car, depending on your lifestyle choices and personal situation

On the other hand, if you choose to live in or near the city center, you're choosing to live close to all amenities, including public transportation. By being close to both the bus and the metro (or even the streetcar), you're making life a whole lot easier. Getting to work, going out or away for the weekend is easy.

In short, the choice of car depends above all on your lifestyle and where you decide to live in Dubai. It also depends on your personal situation (are you a couple, with children, are you on your own, do you need to travel for work). Don't hesitate to weigh up the pros and cons in order to make the best possible decision, and act accordingly.

What it means to own a car in Dubai

To buy a car in Dubai, you'll need three documents. The first is a VISA. This is the classic VISA, the one that allows you to live in the country. The second is a United Arab Emirates driver's license.

Rest assured, if you don't have one (and it's quite possible that you won't), it's quite possible for your French driving license to be certified as international by the local authorities. To do this, you need to apply to the RTA.

You'll need to provide an eye test, certified by an optician. Finally, the authorities will ask you for a non-objection letter. This is a letter provided by your sponsor, certifying that they have no objection to you having a vehicle.
